Course Reflections
Foundations of Therapeutic Recreation
In this course we are taught what we will be doing in our future careers within the Therapeutic Recreation Field. The experiencing leisure assignments helps us really feel how a client may feel when trying out a new activity. This is a good thing to understand because sometimes it can be frustrating learning new things and you wouldn’t want to push the client beyond their limit. We also did research papers on different clientele we could potentially be working with. As well as designing our own program plans to implement. This course provides me with useful knowledge that I will use in the field in the future.
Introduction to Leisure Services
In this course we learned how there are different sides to leisure, as well as different meanings, and how it is different depending on the individual. We developed our own personal leisure philosophy and we learned about the flip side of leisure which is negative aspects on different leisure activities, which is all important to know. We also learned about the history of leisure, what they did for leisure in ancient Greece, ancient Egypt etc. It was interesting to know that some activities from back then still stuck or are pretty similar. I think this course was important because it is good to know that everyone experiences leisure differently. I wouldn’t want to force a client to do an activity that they don’t like.
Skills for Practice in Therapeutic Recreation
In this class we learned about communication and how to do so effectively, by knowing your audience, actively listening and body language. We also learned about empathy, respect, concern and rapport. We also learned about different types of health conditions that causes communication challenges. In this class we are also required to complete 20 hours of volunteer work under a TR professional to help us work on our communication skills and other skills as well. We also did an advocacy project which helps us promote and advocate for therapeutic recreation services. The skills learned in this class can assist me quite a bit while working in the field. I feel like communication is key in the Therapeutic Recreation field and this course helped me be more aware of relevant information and active listening.
Personal and Professional Development
In this class we had guest speakers once or twice a week. They taught us what to expect in the field as well as what they do. We were also taught valuable information such as tips on job interviews and what employers expect from us. An assignment we did was compile a resources database which helps us be aware of organizations in the area as well as different health conditions. This course helped me be aware of the opportunities around metro and gain knowledge from professionals in the field. Also the resource binder we compiled can be used in the future to show to clients or those I am working with.
